The Railway Ministry stated that it has registered over 8% increase in earnings at Rs 70,501 crore during the ongoing financial year ending January 31. This was said barely weeks before the presentation of the Railway Budget. However, the growth was 8.56% between April 1, 2009-January 31, 2010 as Railways earned Rs 70,501.65 crore in comparison to Rs 64,943.32 crore it earned during the same period last year. The Budget which will be presented on February 24 is expected to focus on raised public-private partnership to expend railway network and seek increased fund allocation for expediting ongoing railway infrastructure Meanwhile, the total goods earnings rose from Rs 44,035.66 crore to Rs 47,763.29 crore during this period while the passenger earnings also increased from Rs 18,057.41 crore to Rs 19,393.26 crore. Consequently, the growth in goods earnings was registered at 8.47% while the growth registered in passenger earnings was at 7.40%. On the other hand, railways carried 6,188.78 million passengers during the 10-month period as against 5,917.13 million it carried during the same period last year, an increase of 4.59%. Previously, it was said that the first phase of Mumbai Monorail, India’s first such system is to be commissioned by Larsen & Toubro and Malaysia’s Scomi Group by end of 2010. The Rs 2,460-crore project is an initiative of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) and is a modern urban transport where cars move on a single beam in an elevated corridor. The project involves design, construction, installation, testing and commissioning from Wadala and Chembur via Mahul (approximately 9 kilometres) in phase I and Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Wadala (approximately 11 kilometres) in phase II. Moreover, Indian Railways has increased its cargo loading target for the current fiscal from 882 million tonne estimated in the July 2009 budget to 900 million tonnes. Following a surge in industrial activity, the railways in the last few months has posted a double-digit growth in various key commodities like the coal and cement, as indicated by growth of 11.7% in industrial production in November 2009. However, earlier, for the Railway budget of 2010-11, the government of Orissa has sought for the allocation of Rs. 1805 crore for its Railway projects in the state, including Rs. 790 crore for the ongoing projects. The Orissa government has asked for the sanction of Rs. 300 crore for the Rs. 1000 crore Khurda - Bolangir railway project, in a memorandum submitted to the Union government, where only Rs. 28.07 crore was sanctioned during the last budget. Similarly, Rs. 200 crore has been sought for the Rs. 594 crore Haridaspur - Paradip railway project for which Rs. 70 crore was allocated last year. Ford to invest $400 mn in producing new Explorer SUV Meanwhile, continuing with the growth trajectory, Indian Railways have registered a growth of about nine per cent in its revenue earnings. Indian Railways posted a growth of 8.76 per cent in total approximate earnings on originating basis during April -December 2009 stood at Rs. 62975.58 crore as against Rs. 57901.88 crore reported during the corresponding period last year. On the other hand, Railway minister Mamata Banerjee brought good news for Karnataka''s passengers. This is since she flagged off 3 major intercity expresses namely Bangalore-Shimoga Intercity Express , Yeshwantpur-Mysore Express and Yeshwantpur-Solapur Golgumbaz Tri-weekly Express. She inaugurated the renovated Tumkur and Dharmapuri stations and introduced the solid-state interlocking system at Bangalore City station. Moreover, Delhi Metro has achieved yet another milestone as it has ferried over 100 crore people since it became operational seven years ago. With the massive expansion (of the Metro network) in the last seven years, the number of people who have availed Delhi Metro services touched a record 1,014,955,894 yesterday, DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said. Rail transport is a commonly used mode of long-distance transportation in India. Almost all rail operations in India are handled by a state-owned organisation, Indian Railways, Ministry of Railways. The rail network traverses the length and breadth of the country, covering a total length of 63,140 kilometres (39,233 mi). It is said to be the 4th largest railway network in the world, transporting over 6 billion passengers and over 350 million tonnes of freight annually.
